Space Empires 4X is a retro-styled hex-and-counter sci-fi wargame by GMT Games, with good component quality, engaging strategic decisions and a clear rulebook that comes with excellent player aid sheets. The game offers an interesting and engaging experience as a solo, family or collective game, with superb gameplay that provides genre without adding special cases. Many players enjoy the added complexity and detail of filling out spreadsheets for technology development and ship building, while others find it a burden that detracts from gameplay, especially when dishonest players ruin the game. The game is described as slower than Twilight Imperium but a faster and more intuitive gameplay than similar 4x games on the market. The only downsides are the price for an all-cardboard game and the ease of accidentally showing the size of a ship group by knocking a stack of cardboard chits over.
