Dazai'nin yer yer dördüncü duvarı yıkarak okura birebir seslendiği kısa roman, yazarın İnsanlığımı Yitirirken'in baş karakteri Yozo Oba'yla ilgili kaleme aldığı ilk eser. Yozo Oba, sevgilisi Sono'yla birlikte Kamakura'da denize atlayarak intihar eder. Sevgilisi ölür, Yozo ise balıkçılar tarafından kurtarılır ve deniz kenarındaki bir sanatoryuma yatırılır. Vaktini diğer hastalarla, ziyarete gelen dostlarıyla ve hemşiresiyle geçirirken herkes Yozo için neşeli, hatta soytarıca bir atmosfer yaratmaya çalışır.
