In 1866, a sea monster appeared in the world's seas, observed by various ships. This enormous marine animal, which is blamed for some maritime accidents and the disappearance of some ships and is described as an object much larger and faster than a whale, also causes heated debates in the scientific world. Taking action, the United States prepares the frigate Abraham Lincoln for an expedition to go after the monster. Professor Aronnax from the Paris Museum of Natural History, his loyal servant Conseil and Canadian harpooner Ned Land also join this expedition.
