- Date: January 1, 1921. It snowed in Istanbul on the first morning of a new year, but it did not catch on. Whiteness stands out on the roadsides and Çamlıca hill. Although a ferry anchored from Sirkeci is full of cotton bales, its main burden is the Kuva-i Milliye supporters who crossed into Anatolia to join the resistance. There are four poets on the ferry: Yusuf Ziya, Faruk Nafiz, Vala Nureddin and Nazım Hikmet. As you approach the Maiden's Tower, the fear in Nazım's heart grows. Because, during the occupation years, the Maiden's Tower was used by British soldiers as an outpost where ships passing through the Bosphorus were controlled. The ferry stops its engines when it reaches the Maiden's Tower. However, no matter how cold-blooded the resisters lying on the cotton bales try to appear, their hearts beat like a high-speed machine. The search at the Maiden's Tower is carried out casually and permission to pass to the ferry is given. Nazım takes a deep breath, looking at the Maiden's Tower, which is getting smaller and smaller, from the rail of the ferry sailing through the occupation ships anchored in the Bosphorus. The name of the ferry that carried Nazım Hikmet to Anatolia on the first day of the new year was New World. And, if asked, the fake ID that Nazım would show to the British soldiers read: Egg Merchant!A. Show more
